Sweetheart
Sweetheart came to the rescue from our municipal shelter. She was picked up as either stray, or abandoned (they couldn't say which) with a "friend", another dachshund whom they suspect was her offspring. Because he was not as old as Sweetheart clearly is, they decided to give him a chance for placement through their own adoptions program. Sweethearts only options were rescue or, failing that, euthanasia.
Even though Sweetheart is (as of this writing) listed on our adoptable dachshunds page, I have no illusions about her chances for finding a new home. She's an older girl and while I know that she isn't going to keel over dead tomorrow, I also know that most people won't even consider an older dog for exactly that fear. It's a common problem that all breed rescuers have. Wonderful dogs who will never find a "forever" home because they are seniors.
So, even knowing that she had absolutely no chance of leaving rescue, Sweetheart was welcomed here with open arms and heart. She will be safe until her time to pass to the Rainbow Bridge comes and I know that she's going to take a large part of my heart with her when she goes. I often tell people that I have a large, soft spot in my heart for the seniors, specifically so that they can take it with them when they leave.
Benny, You are an incredible
Benny,
You are an incredible human being! The love and respect that you show to the senior dogs is amazing! It's too bad that there are not more people in this world willing to take a chance on senior dogs. Our 12 year old doxie, Buster, is the light of my life! We treat him just as we treat our 6 yr old doxie, with lots of love and respect. His age just makes him wiser! Thank you for your dedication to the breed of dogs we love best!!
Benny, Sweetheart is a
Benny, Sweetheart is a Sweetheart. The tears are flowing for her. I have three little ladies of my own and I wouldn't trade the world for them. It breaks my heart to hear of these animals and their situations due to the environment thay are in. I wish I could afford to take all the Dachshunds in the world. They are the most wonderful pets. Someday I hope to have a place on a farm to where I can rescue these little girls and boys and believe you me they won't be adopted out. My home will be their "forever home". Thanks for your love and support of these little guys and gals.
What incredible stories. I
What incredible stories. I have a 13 year old doxie who is diabetic and blind. He's my baby and I can't imagine life without him in it. I hope to adopt another doxie someday. It's a wonderful thing you do for these forgotten angels. The love and concern you show them is truly inspiring.
Hi Benny. This is Cindy
Hi Benny. This is Cindy from New York State. I am the person who has Scooter. His beautiful red coat is lighter, turning gray/white. But he is still a lovebug and going strong. He sleeps with my daughter every night and is such a happy boy. We all love him!! I just have to say that we love seniors too!!! Our Fred dog turned 14 last December and Ellie is 13 now. I told my hubby that we should open a Senior Citizen Home for Dachshunds. He can't stand it when people just give their dogs away when they reach a certain age... can't understand it. There are elderly people that can't stay in their own homes any longer but you would think their families would take care of their pets for them. It is so sad when they won't. You are a good man Benny. Keep up the good work.

I read every story here and
I read every story here and I am balling my eyes out. Thank you for doing such great work! Every dog should have the love you provide your rescues. I do not own a dox, my best friend does and Im shopping for her x-mas present. I like to make sure whatever I get her also benefits an animal. We have two labs and a rescue we just took in and I wish everyone would take a chance on an animal that isnt a puppy. Our rescue came to us not knowing what a toy is, not trusting enough to take treats from a human hand, and never having barked before. I was told he had bad social skills. In a few days, a dog that was in danger of euthanasia because of his "problems socializing" has given me a new lease on life and is a core member of my family. He plays non-stop, licks my hands, takes treats and has found his voice! Dogs will reflect the love and care you give them. I hope people stop looking for the ideal young well-behaved, loving dog.
